Changes 10/3/08

By Paige
Today was a typical Friday, in that everyone was excited for the weekend and about the upcoming changes. Mrs. King was present in the classroom to shadow me, so the transition can be as smooth as possible. I gave her a chance to answer the students' questions and they responded well to her. I am sure there are things that will change, but I am sure she will do a good job.

The 6th grade students at Life Christian Academy are some of the best students anywhere, in my opinion. We all have our ups and downs, but I am definitely going to miss them. Tuesday will be my last day, so we will not be doing a lot of work that day. I have a couple of things that I want to do with the class to say goodbye before I go.

As for the tests and quizzes this week, most of the tests that have been graded have been very good. I am proud of the progress the students have made this year and I hope it continues. Mrs. King has elected not to keep this blog, so I will do my own blog and I will pass that blog address out along with my address before I leave. Please feel free to email, call, leave me a comment, or write! I will miss you all.

The News 10/1/08

By Paige
As many of you have probably heard already, I am going to be leaving Life Christian Academy to move to Stockbridge, Georgia. I had hoped to find a job in that area before moving, but the school did not feel that prolonging the transition was conducive. The new teacher is Ginger King and she will begin shadowing me on Friday. Next Tuesday will be my last day at Life Christian Academy as Mrs. King is ready to begin immediately.

I talked to the students today and assured them that we will be making sure the transition is as smooth as possible. Please know that I am very attached to my students and this is all very hard for me as well as the students. We are going to make the best out of our next four days together though. I will be reserving Tuesday afternoon for me and the students to say goodbye.

I have enjoyed working with all of you and I wish you and your student the best of luck. I have definitely enjoyed this ride with you! Also, I will be transitioning to a personal blog (per the students' request) so they can stay in touch with me and keep up with how things are going.

Back to Normal 9/29/08

By Paige
Today our class returned to a sense of normal. We went back over several things the students completed while I was absent last week. We are starting fractions in math, so it is important that each student know their multiplication tables fluently. Please help them brush up on these skills. Also, we have more tests and quizzes than usual this week, because I wanted to review with the students. I did not want them to feel pressured or unprepared while a substitute teacher was present in the classroom.

I will try to be conscious of the amount of homework I assign this week, so students can fully prepare for their tests and quizzes. Report cards go out shortly after the fall break, so I would like for the students to have adequate time to improve their grades.

Tomorrow
History Test (study guide given)
English Test (study guide given)

Wednesday
Math Test

Thursday
Science Test (open book)

Friday
Penmanship Test
Bible Memory Verse Test
Spelling Test
History Quiz

I miss the class 9/26/08

By Paige
Well, I have been gone since lunch on Wednesday and I really miss the 6th graders! I did not realize how much I count on them for funny stories, lost books, questions, and of course asking to go to the bathroom constantly. My last few days have been busy as we are in the process of moving to Stockbridge, Georgia. As of now, we have rented a nice house and I am still waiting to hear about a job up here.

I know the limbo is aggravating and not consistent for the students. My hope is to have some form of transition plan in place and leaving date very soon. I really love each student and am going to miss them terribly. Crying is not my favorite thing to do, but it is all I can do when it comes to leaving my students.

However, in the meantime, I hope that each student continues to do well academically and socially. My desire is for all this transition to be a great stepping stone for the class to move to the next level! As always, my door is always open and you have my number for any questions or comments.

Group Day 9/18/08

By Paige
Today we had group work all day. Most of the students did very well working together as a team. There are a lot of things going on at school and we are all excited. First of all, we won the pizza party for 100% participation. We will be enjoying that tomorrow at 1 p.m. Yay! Thanks to all parents who made that possible. Also, thanks for attending the PTP meeting on Tuesday night. Our class had the most parents in attendance and our class won a $25 gift card to spend as a class! The students are super excited about all the incentives they have worked hard for you and you have supported them.

Tonight for homework, the students had to complete their science definitions and finish math page 42 (#5-7 all problems).

Tomorrow is a new day full of more surprises!

The Day After

By Paige
Well today was the day after I dropped the bomb about leaving. The students seem to be taking it well and I did not cry today! That's an improvement from yesterday. I so appreciate the emails, phone calls, and visits from parents. The students have been so kind and comforting as well. I hope to make the most of the time that I have left with them (i.e. new pictures, maybe a party for PTP 100% participation, and lots of good days.)

The students did not have any homework today as progress reports were given out tonight at the PTP meeting. I will be assigning homework again on Thursday night. There is a Math test tomorrow and then the Friday tests. I know many of the grades in the Tuesday folder were not as good as we had all hoped, but I will be giving extra credit and also doing more extensive reviews to help bring up those grades.

As always, call, email, or leave me a comment!

The Big Announcement

By Paige
Well, as many of you have probably heard by now, I am going to be relocating with my husband, Eric, to Stockbridge, Georgia. Eric is a youth pastor and we feel that God has called our time in Albany to a close. He has opened a door for us at a church in Stockbridge and my husband will be moving the beginning of October. I am not sure of my departure date as of yet due to finding another job.

I guess I am picky! I have been spoiled by my class and I really love my students. I am struggling with the thought of leaving them. Tearfully, I talked to them this morning and let them know about the changes that are coming. The Akridges and myself are praying for another teacher to transition into the classroom. I have assured the students that things will not change too much and I encouraged them to keep up with their academics and keep building the team spirit (we have tried to work on!)

Until I leave, I avail myself to you and to your student. I will be happy to answer any questions and help in any way that I can. I know that the next teacher is going to inherit some awesome parents and amazing students!

This week's Bible memory verse is Matthew 21:22.

New Day 09/09/2008

By Paige
We changed seating arrangements today and I think most of the students really like the new positions in the classroom. We were able to accomplish a pretty good bit of work today and we will be doing some work with our newspapers tomorrow. I love the newspapers and doing fun, educational activities. Overall, I believe the year is going well and the students are responding well to the classroom routine, the work and each other.

I have been very proud of the students' progress with the planners, the notebooks, and the teamwork.

There are a few things that I want to remind you about:
1---Please make sure you join the PTP or the GTP---the first class who has 100% participation will win a pizza party and our class has about 75% participation now.
2---There is a PTP meeting next Tuesday, September 16th at 6:30 p.m., Your child's progress report will be given to you at the meeting. Otherwise, they will get it on Wednesday, when they return to school.
3---I will be out of town on Thursday and Friday of this week. Sherry Merritt will be taking care of the class in my absence. I will be giving out the study guides for the tests/quizzes tomorrow. Please make sure you help your child study, I won't be there to assist them during the tests.

Thanks for being so great and allowing me to be apart of your child's life!

--Mrs. Gordon

Group Day 9/08/08

By Paige
Today was an interesting day. Not only was a Monday, but we did group work all day. The students seemed to enjoy the opportunity to work cooperatively instead of independently today. We will be changing the seating arrangements around tomorrow to give each student a fresh start in their seating. However, I do enjoy the group work for a change of pace.

Please be advised that this week's bible memory verse is Hebrews 13:6. "So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me."

We will not have any quizzes or tests until Wednesday of this week.

Fun Friday 9/05/08

By Paige
Today was a good day! Most of the students did excellent on their tests and I am extremely proud. I am hoping that next week will be equally as good as today. We are continuing to work on teamwork and I have been doing several group projects. Stop by the classroom and see our progress! We have been using the newspapers to enhance our math, science, and history/political skills! I am including several pictures with this email to show some of the fun we have been having in and out of the classroom! --Mrs. Gordon

Progress Made

By Paige
Today was a good day. The students were able to take their history exam and many of them made excellent grades. I was very proud of their efforts. I was even more impressed by how well they are playing together at recess. The teamwork is very encouraging and I hope to continue progressing towards my goal of cooperative teamwork.

We did a new exercise today in math, which I believe the students really enjoyed. They were placed in groups and asked to use the grocery store sale papers to create a menu. Each group came up with a unique menu and different ideas of entertaining guests. The menus are posted outside the classroom for the school to see.

I want to make you aware that progress reports go out on September 16th at the Parent Teacher Partnership meeting at 6 p.m. at the school. Please come and support our school. Also, if you have not joined the PTP or the grandparents PTP, please do so. Our class is in the lead for having 100% participation, which will win our class a pizza party. We are only 10 students away from the party!

Back on Track 9/3/08

By Paige
Today was a much better day. We were able to accomplish all that we needed to and tomorrow is a busy day as well. I think this week is going to be successful, inspite of the crunch of only a four day work week. The history quiz went pretty well; however, several students did not do as well as I had hoped on the math test. I am going to be working with some of the students individually to help improve mastery of some of the math skills. Also, I will be contacting some parents to keep them current on their child's progress.

We have been working on team building activities and group work to enhance our abilities as a whole class. I think many students are doing well working together and appreciate the opportunity for interaction with each other. Please encourage your child to make the most of their opportunities in the classroom to build friendships and to enjoy every aspect of their educational experience.

Looking forward to the rest of the week! As always, call, email, comment on this blog and let me know if you need anything from me or if you have questions.

The Day After 9/2/08

By Paige
The day after a holiday is always hard to get back into the swing of things. Today was definitely a challenge for all of us to get up and stay focused. Many of the students were complaining of being tired and sluggish, so we did a lot of group work and took a few extra minutes for recess. I hope everyone comes to school refreshed tomorrow and ready to get back into our routine. I know I am going to bed earlier! This week is going to be a bit of a challenge for the students to overcome, because it is a shorter week. Please help your student study and get refocused.

We have several tests and quizzes this week. I am conscious of the short time frame so I am giving in-depth study guides and reviewing heavily so the students can do their best. Please watch the planners and also the folders to follow up with this extra help.

Wednesday--
Math Test 1
History Quiz 3

Thursday--
History Test 1

Friday--
Language Test
Bible Memory Verse Test
Penmanship Test
Spelling Test

The Bible Memory Verse is 1 Corinthians 13:1--"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal."

Awesome Friday 8/29/08

By Paige
Today was a great ending to the week! The students did much better than I anticipated on all the tests and were so cooperative. The day went really smoothly and we were able to accomplish a lot. We even added a new element to our classroom. From now on three days a week, we will be receiving the Albany Herald newspaper at school. I hope to teach the students how to use the paper and recognize how vital it can be as a resource. So you should see the newspapers coming home with them on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week. I am looking forward to the class staying current on events and also finding new ways to get involved in history, politics, local events, etc.

I also want to say thank you to all parents for really supporting me and helping out with the planners, school supplies, and homework. I know 6th grade has been challenging so far and there are more surprises yet to come! Next week will be a little test for all of us because of the holiday on Monday, but I think we can stay on track and continue working well together.

Also, we are starting to investigate field trip possibilities for the class. Please let me know if you would be interested in helping to chaperone these events. One last thing, we will have a booth at the Candy Fest (at LCCI) around Halloween time and I desperately need parents to help me work at it! So as I get more info I will let you know!

"Diligent" 8/28/08

By Paige
Today was a very endearing day for the 6th grade class. We are still working out small things like bringing your planner everyday, having the planner signed every day, and also walking in a straight, single-file line. Hopefully that will be all be understood soon and we can move on to other things.

Overall, most of the students are doing well academically and are adjusting to LCA well. The science quizzes today were not as good as I had hoped, but after playing 3 science review games, I believe the students are ready for tomorrow's test. Please make sure you are following up with your child about his/her homework.

We have started some new things in the classroom that are exciting. Our school collects nestle pure life labels off the water bottles to receive money for p.e. equipment from Nestle. As a class, we have set a goal of 1000 labels and we will have a pizza party. The students have already collected over 135 in three days. If you would, please help your child participate as the class is encouraging team work for their goal. Tomorrow will be a great day, inspite of the tests. The students should be ready for the tests and will be excited for the long weekend.

Interesting Day 8/27/08

By Paige
Well, today has been extremely interesting! I would say we are getting back to the basics of school behavior today. We had some issues in the lunchroom with students not behaving and throwing food/spitting their drink at other students. We will be sitting in assigned seats for the rest of the week and having a full 30 minute silent lunch. Unfortunately, lunch was not a good break time today nor was it a safe place as several students have either food or drink on their uniform as a result. Also, we are practicing walking in a straight, single-file, quiet line. Most of the students are doing better with this. I think we will be able to get acclimated to school behavior soon--please help me out with this. Thanks for your help and understanding.

I have posted grades on the online system. Please make sure your child is completing their homework, following directions for homework, and studying for tests/quizzes. The grades will improve as the 9 weeks progresses and more grades are taken. Tests count for 50%, homework is 20%, quizzes are 20%, and daily grades are 10%.

There is no homework tonight other than studying for a science quiz for tomorrow. The students have a study guide they copied off the board, please help them study this for tomorrow.

---Mrs. Gordon

Work Begins 8/26/08

By Paige
Well, today has been a little crazy. The Abeka and Bob Jones curriculum are written on a college preparatory level, which is a little more challenging for some students. Many students were a little shocked today by the Math Quiz and the Language Test. Most of the students did very well on the Math and I have not graded all the Language Tests yet. I have put the Math quizzes into the Tuesday folder. Please look at the papers and return to me with the folder signed tomorrow. Thanks. I know that some parents have been concerned because we are moving so quickly. Please make sure that your child is writing down all of their homework and test/quiz information in their planner daily. I am going to try and follow behind the students more closely to make sure they are writing down all of their homework, whether it is finished or not. I will give as much advance warning as possible about upcoming tests and quizzes as I can. Please help your students to remember to write everything down, as we are preparing for Middle School next year.

The homework for tonight is:
Spelling--
write a sentence with each spelling word
Science--
write definitions for the words that were on the board
read pages 31-36 if you did not finish in class
History--
finish map skills page 7
Do comprehension check on page 21

Looking forward to a great rest of the week--please make note of the tests/quizzes for the rest of the week that were on yesterday's blog. Thanks.

Maniac Monday 8/25/08

By Paige
Today was a typical Monday. We were all dragging a bit and trying to get acclimated back into the routine of school. Many of the students were unable to finish all of their classwork, so there was homework that should have been completed. I think the day was pretty good overall though. There have been several parents to call, email, or comment on this blog with suggestions, issues, or just comments. I appreciate all communication with my students and their parents! Please always feel free to contact me whenever and speak freely.

The tests/quizzes for the week are as follows:
Tuesday---
Math Quiz 1
Language Test 1

Wednesday---
History Quiz 2

Thursday---
Science Quiz 2

Friday---
Penmanship Test 2
Bible Memory Verse Test (oral)
Spelling Test (list 2)
Science Test 1

The memory verse for the week is Galatians 6:7 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

---Mrs. Gordon

Family Day 8/22/08

By Paige
Today started off on a serious note. I had to have our first family talk with the class as a whole. We discussed what is acceptable and what is not acceptable to say and do. I urged all students to respect each other and embrace our differences. Hopefully, we all came to an understanding about what is expected of them. Otherwise, today was a good day. A little crazy at times, but I have come to expect and love the level of dysfunction! Ha ha!

Anyway, the tests and quizzes all went well. Some students did exceptionally well and I am very proud of them! Other students did not study as much as they should have. Consequently, they did not do as well as I had hoped.
The students were required to finish all classwork for homework that was not completed in class. Every student is supposed to finish writing their 2 page humorous story in their journal. Additionally, we did math page 9 and 10 today and language page 19 and 20. They were required to finish page 2 and 3 in the map skills book and read science page 22-26. I think many students finished the assignments, while others elected to finish over the weekend. I am anticipating a great week next week and I will keep you posted on the classroom atmosphere! --Mrs. Gordon

Fun Day 8/21/08

By Paige

Well today was an interesting day at best. We started off the day with no air conditioning. I was afraid at first the students would complain and the situation would be difficult to deal with, but we turned on all the fans and opened the door and the students were AMAZING! I was so proud of how mature they were in handling the ordeal. The air was repaired in a couple of hours and the day was saved!

We were able to fine tune the schedule a bit more today and efficiently use class time. Each student should now have five folders for each individual subject: math, language, spelling/bible, history, and science as well as a journal (spiral notebook--Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Garcia!) The students are really beginning to get the cadence of 6th grade work. There will be four tests/quizzes tomorrow and I believe every student is prepared for them. We will have penmanship (written), bible memory verse (oral), and spelling (written) in the morning and then the science quiz in the afternoon.

Today's homework is:
*Finish History page 11 (both the comp check and chapter 1 checkup)
*Finish the five funny story ideas for Reading in the journal
*Study for all the tests for tomorrow

As always can't wait for tomorrow and all of its surprises! Feel free to comment on these blogs, call me or email me anytime.

--Mrs. Gordon

Success is Around the Corner 8/20/08

By Paige
Well, this week is half over and wow! Where did the week go? We have been trying to get the schedule modified and make sure we have plenty of time for our subjects. As a result of this adjustment, many of the students have had a lot of homework this week. Once we get going, the homework will be more uniform. Please make sure you are signing your child's planner each night and that your student continues to bring all their books and planner to class every day.

Also, we will be reorganizing the notebooks in the morning. Each child will have 5 folders with paper for the subjects they will need to do most of the writing in: Math, Language, Science, Spelling, History. One subject will be done in one notebook. Penmanship, Bible and Reading will be done in the textbooks.

The History Quiz was a success. I was very pleased with everyone's performance on the first quiz and am looking forward to every one doing outstanding on Friday's tests. Thanks for all your support, it is definitely going to make this year a success!

Get Ready, Get Set, GO! 8/19/08

By Paige
We are off to a great start in 6th grade at LCA. Today was the first day we checked homework and prepared for a quiz for tomorrow. Also, the Tuesday folders went home today with the conduct grade so far and a letter from me along with the lunch form for next week. Please be sure to return the folder tomorrow and the lunch form by Thursday. Also, make sure your student is doing his/her homework and you are signing their planner daily. I am open to suggestions from parents of ways to make the classroom run better, if you would like to let me know. One suggestion I am definitely taking is giving each student enough folders to have one for each subject. The folders are working out really well and the students seem to really like them. Overall, we are off to a great start and moving quickly, so please help your student keep up!

Don't forget History Quiz tomorrow and the tests/quizzes for Friday.

First "Real" Day of School 8/18/08

Sixth grade is going to be lots of fun, but challenging. Please help your student keep up and he/she will do great this year. The First Day 8/15/08

By Paige
Well, the first day of school was better than I expected. Each student was very well behaved and we were able to cover some remedial math, reading, and penmanship together. I could not have asked for a better day. The new students seemed to fit right in with the returning students and we all acclimated to the 6th grade well! I want to blog daily to keep parents and students informed on the classroom and the events of the school.

There are a few things I want to remind everyone of:
*Homework will be given on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of each week.
*Homework and tests/quizzes will be written down in the planners--so parents double check these!
*Planners and books should be brought to class daily.
*Each student was provided with 3 folders full of paper to keep ALL their assignments in---no loose papers will be turned in! ALL work will be graded in the notebooks!

Looking forward to a great year and excited about a new week full of surprises!

---Mrs. Gordon
